Indian Head Massage

The massage involves working with a firm and gentle rhythm to help undo knots, release blockages and relieve physical and emotional tension and stress.

It also helps stimulate the circulation of the scalp which nourishes the hair roots. Indian Head Massage is well known for relieving long-term ailments such as headaches, eyestrain, sinusitis, insomnia, fatigue and stress.

It is often used in the workplace as even short treatments can be very beneficial, especially when given on a regular basis.

Indian Head Massage uses elements from the ancient Ayurvedic healing system and combines the physical head, neck and shoulder massage with subtle healing that affects the body’s energy centres by working with the top 3 chakras. This powerful therapy leaves you feeling relaxed, balanced and energised.

Treatments are for 30 minutes.

Holistic Massage

Holistic Massage has been known and used for thousands of years as one of the most beneficial ways of keeping the body free from stress and illness

Holistic means considering the complete person, mind, body and spirit.

Massage improves circulation, bringing fresh oxygen and nutrients to the body’s cells, helps to eliminate toxins and releases muscular tension and stress.

When the body is allowed to relax it can begin to heal itself. Holistic massage can help to heal on many levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual.

Having regular massage treatments can ease minor aches and pains and can help to prevent many common ailments and symptoms of stress such as headaches, insomnia, anxiety, repetitive strain injury and general fatigue.

One hour full body massage is available or 30 minute back, neck and shoulder massage.

On Site Massage

On Site Massage (OSM) is made up of a sequence of complex massage moves that create one flowing form, known as a 'kata' The traditional Chinese massage techniques from which these moves come from, date back over 5,000 years. From these origins grew the more complex systems of shiatsu, acupuncture and acupressure.

Each of these therapies work with the meridians, which are channels of energy or 'Ki', which circulate the whole body. When these channels are clear, energy will move around freely and keep the body holistically balanced and harmonious. When the flow is impaired, due to illness, stress and tension, an energy block is created and can be felt as discomfort, either physically or emotionally.

Using acupressure points, parts of the OSM treatment is specifically aimed at releasing these blockages. OSM also includes stretches to relieve muscular tension from sitting at a desk all day, relaxing and nuturing kneading strokes that ease stiff muscles and finally, percussion which stimulates and invigorates! The overall effect of the treatment is both relaxing and energizing.

We also offer a 30 minute foot massage incorporating reflexology techniques for the workplace or larger events.

Some people want a foot massage, but feel uncomfortable with the idea. To put you at ease, Exhale would like to reassure you that your feet will always be cleaned before the start of your reflexology treatment.

We would be happy to visit your workplace to provide a free taster session so that you can feel the beneficial effects of an Indian Head Massage. For details of costs please visit our website.

Deep Tissue Massage

My massage is never the same. I cannot do massage by numbers. It would bore me. As a therapist, I am interested in you, in what has brought you to me, in what has happened to bring about pain or tension in your body, in how it manifests itself in you. And in how I can make you feel better.

I work normally quite deeply – soft massage is, in my opinion, utterly ineffective. If you like gentle massage such as given out in a thousand spas up and down the country each day, do not come to me.

Come to me if you want me to break down held tensions, finding areas of the body that are not functioning as they should be, or with the freedom that they need. This deep work brings a much deeper sense of relaxation to the body. Some of it can be painful but it is a ‘good pain’ and I always respect your tolerance for this kind of work. I promise you, you will leave feeling 10 times better than when you arrive.

I work a lot with people who do sport – swimmers, runners, kick boxers, tennis players. I try to heal their injuries or help to prevent injury. I love stretching them in ways they cannot stretch themselves (and they love it too).

Most often, though, I treat those whose lives are largely sedentary, office workers who get RSI or tensions in the back, shoulders, neck and arms – or in the glutes and back leg muscles from sitting too long. We were not meant to live like this but most of us do now and the body suffers. Having a massage is a remarkably effective and pleasurable way of taking that pain away. Try it some time.

£40 per hour. Discounts for students

Deep Tissue Massage

Deep tissue massage concentrates on areas of tension using deep kneading and stoking techniques, manipulation and stretching of the muscles and surrounding soft tissue. This massage helps to free trapped nerves, oxygenate poorly circulated areas and allows the spine and joints to relax into alignment.

With the release of muscular tension there is a calming of the mind, which can lead to a deep state of relaxation.

Most adults have developed some negative postural habits either due to repetitive activities or mental and emotional influences on the body.

Those people whose jobs lead to repetitive postures such as drivers, desk workers, and computer operators, often find that gradual development of muscular imbalance leads to pain and tension.

Also people whose work or leisure activities involve a high level of muscular output often accumulate residues of lactic acid in their muscles which leads to stiffness and pain. All of these people would benefit from deep tissue massage treatments.

Full body treatments are for an hour. 30 minute treatments are also given.

Sports Remedial Massage

This therapy addresses pain, dysfunction and tension in the body via the soft tissues (muscles, tendons, ligaments).

It uses general massage along side specific methods of soft tissue release, including assisted stretching, strengthening exercises, neuromuscular and connective tissue techniques.

Posture and general use of the body is often an important consideration in evaluating the cause of the problem and achieving change.

Sports Remedial Massage can be used to prevent problems by bringing awareness to habitual patterns within the body, which can arise from sport, work or at home.

Conditions regularly treated:

* Chronic postural problems
* R.S.I, neck, shoulder and back pain
* Post acute injury recovery
* General relaxation

Philip Bishop
Trained at London School of Sports Massage and London College of Massage and holds a diploma from both schools as well as a BTEC in sports remedial massage. He is a member of the Sports Massage Association.

He also trained at the Scott Studio in Pilates Matwork. See One to One Pilates.

Connective Tissue (CTM)
Elisabeth Dicke, the pioneer of CTM (1929), was a Remedial Gymnastic Therapist. She developed the method to save her own leg from being amputated. After a few treatments, she noticed that the circulation in her leg had improved and that her muscle spasms were easing. She not only prevented amputation; after just three months she was able to walk again. CTM works between the muscles and connective tissue, through lymphatic and blood vessels that, combined with Sport and Therapeutic Massage, normalises muscle tone and elasticity. CTM works for all the muscles in the body.

SPORTS MASSAGE
Is essential for anyone that exercises, from walking for leisure to the most competitive sports. It prevents and treats injuries, gives the muscles flexibility, helps transport essential nutrients to the working muscles and eliminating toxins in and around them.

Remember, when you feel a muscle pain, either in sport or at work it is the body telling you that something is not right. Don’t wait too long to have it checked. Prevent any further injury by having it treated.

Advice will be given on how to avoid repetitive strain injuries from any type of job, on how to relax by breathing properly and therefore avoid upper back tightness.

General advice on Nutrition will be given if needed.

What will treatments help?
  • Stress and tension
  • lymphatic system
  • Muscle injuries
  • Adhesions and fixations
  • Poor circulation and congestion
  • Neck and shoulder knots
  • Muscle flexibility using muscle energy technique
For the working person it will help:

  • Remove painful knots in neck and shoulders
  • Eliminate headaches due to stress
  • Increase general relaxation
  • Reduce the negative effects of stress
  • Improve sleep patterns
  • Remove the feeling of a knife between the shoulders

For the athlete it will help:

  • eliminate muscle imbalances
  • improve joint movements
  • increase endurance
  • cleanse tissues of toxin build up
  • greatly reduce tendency to injury

If the injury is already there then Sport Massage and intrasound is the treatment that Maria uses to help heal the injury. Plus she will give advice on how to avoid further injuries by trying to understand together what caused the injury in the first place. Also using Muscle Energy Technique (MET) to stretch fibrotic muscles and help heal injured muscles.

Maria also carries out deep tissue massage.

Maria has had over 10 years experience as a massage therapist. To make an appointment with Maria please call 07956 662 954 or Email:

Tui Na is one of the main branches of Chinese Medicine alongside Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine and Qi Gong.

Tui Na massage is performed through clothing, using various massage techniques: lifting, stretching, stroking, pushing and grasping. It is quite vigorous. These are accompanied by acupressure and joint manipulation.

Tui Na does not simply work on the muscles, bones, and joints. It works with the energy of the body at a deeper level. As the practitioner senses the client's body with their hands, they are able to assess the distribution of energy and affect its flow.

Massaging the meridians and stimulating specific Qi points, Tui-Na uses the same theory in its treatments as acupuncture. Often they are used together to remove blockages along the meridians of the body and stimulate the flow of qi and blood to promote healing

Whilst Tui Na is renowned for its effectiveness in the treatment of musculo-skeletal conditions - joint pain, arthritis, sciatica - it is also effective for many other problems such as headaches and migraine, anxiety and panic attacks, digestive problems, constipation, circulatory problems, hormonal imbalance, stress and related conditions, insomnia. Tui Na is also an effective way to maintain physical and emotional health by keeping the body's energy in balance.

Richard specialises in combining Tui Na with acupuncture treatments.
